Only a week until I get the keys to my new home in Bourgogne! Then the real work starts, so it was nice to take a few days to visit friends at their chalet for a vacation in the French Alps. The landscape was stunningly beautiful. In many ways, it reminded me of the PNW, with the thick underbrush, evergreen trees, and alpine lakes. But it was steeper, studded with alpine meadows, and sprinkled with clusters of cute chalets on the mountainsides.
I was surprised by how winded I got on our first hike, and had to stop halfway. Later I learned that our altitude was almost a mile high. That made me feel a little better.
A visit to the co-op for the local cheese (Beaufort) was very interesting, and I learned about the formation of the mountains, the life of the cows, and the cheese-making. We ate delicious fresh vegetables, Beaufort cheese (of course), bread made from wheat grown in the region, as well as local yogurt and butter. YUM.
Now it’s time to pack for my move to my new house, and another trip for a family vacation in the San Juan Islands, WA, and a wedding. Busy days ahead! I’m glad I had a few days to rest (when we weren’t hiking), sleep peacefully, and really recharge. I will definitely be back for another vacation in the French Alps!
